Review ~ Pledged by Gwynneth White

Everyone has a soul mate. But what do you do when your soul mate would rather give his soul to the demons than be with you?

Seventeen-year-old Erin has a problem. Seth has been hers forever, but now an ancient curse is tearing him away. And the demons who invoked it will stop at nothing – even murder – to claim him as their own.

How can she win against a curse so binding that it has damned countless others to this same fate – an eternity alone?

The answer lies in the past. To find it, Erin and Seth must risk all, travelling back in time to a dangerous world where love is forbidden, and life – and death – hang on a pledge.

Follow Erin and Seth as they travel to ancient Shenaya and confront the curse that has plagued their families for millennia. Caught in a war between the Angelic Guardians and the Gefallen, the disembodied dead, they must fight to keep their souls in tact and their love untainted.

My review
Everyone has a soul mate. But what do you do when your soul mate would rather give his soul to the demons than be with you?

That is a great tag line! It just sucks you right in. I was ready for a fantastic read. I am somewhat confused how to write this review. There are parts that I like, and others that I didn't. I really like the premise for this book, but it fell a little short for me. The story is a little slow to start. But, there are some great scenes. The author uses complex imagery to tell the tale, and I could vividly see the places she described. The story, while interesting in places was a little boring for my tastes. It was more explaining less doing. There are a lot of characters to keep up with, which threw me a bit. But by the end, it all came together. While I did end up liking the story, I would have liked to have seen more action.

I received this book from the author for review.

It was OK!

Review ~ Dark Dates by Tracey Sinclair

BLURB: All Cassandra Bick wants is to be left to get on with doing her job. But when you’re a Sensitive whose business is running a dating agency for vampires, life is never going to be straightforward – especially when there’s a supernatural war brewing in London, a sexy new bloodsucker in town and your mysterious, homicidal and vampire hating ex-lover chooses this moment to reappear in your life…

Witty, sharp and entertaining, Dark Dates is a heady mix of vampires, witches and werewolves – with the occasional angel thrown in – and introduces Cassandra Bick, a likeable heroine destined to join the ranks of fantasy’s feistiest females.

My Review

Dark Dates by Tracey Sinclair
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Move over Sookie Stackhouse here comes Cassandra Bick! Cassandra is your mere mortal (who has a gift) with supernatural friends and enemies. In the beginning, I must admit, I was a little confused with the flashbacks popping up, but after the first few chapters, I really got into it. Of course, it was setting up the background for a more thrilling middle and end. Although I never really quite figured out the dynamic with Cassandra and Cain, it was steamy to watch. Let's face it, Cain is just an enigma. On the surface, it seems he doesn't treat Cassandra very well, but something tells me, there is more to the story than we see. And then throw in Laclos, the sexy, egotistical vampire, and you have yourself a spicy little triangle! Plenty of action and twists with this book. I can't wait to see what is in store for Cassandra and friends next!

I received this book from the author for review.

Great Book!

Interview with Tracey
How long have you been writing?
As long as I can remember – I used to write stories when I was really young, and I remember that one of the favourite things people could give me as a present was a notepad (that hasn’t changed!). I got my first story published in a magazine when I was 17.

What jobs did you have before you became a writer?
I’ve always had other jobs, to varying degrees of full-time, though a lot of these were writing related. But I’ve had a varied career that has included working in bookshops, subtitling film and television, working in a law firm and working for a legal publisher.

Tell us a little about your book.
It’s an urban fantasy / paranormal romance with a large dash of humour thrown in. It’s about a woman who runs a dating agency for vampires in London, setting them up with humans, and she finds herself getting drawn into a supernatural war. I wanted to write something modern that reflected the world we live in – one where we’re a little obsessed with vampires – and have a likeable, modern heroine. Hopefully I’ve succeeded!

What is one book you could read over and over?
Oh, there are a few, I think. Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos I like so much I named one of my characters after the author and I reread it every few years; Pride and Prejudice I never get bored of, and I have a handful of Terry Pratchett books that I reread whenever I am feeling a bit low and need cheering up.

What do you do in your free time?
I go to a lot of theatre – London has some of the best theatre in the world, so I’m very lucky, and I review for a theatre website so I get a lot of free tickets. That takes up an awful lot of time! Other than that, I’m not very exciting – mainly just hang out with friends, reading, watching TV.

How do reviews, good or bad, affect you?
I try not to let them affect me – I try not to read too many – but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get that ‘punched in the gut’ feeling when I get a poor review. And sometimes the good reviews freak me out as well, as I start to panic and think they won’t like the next book! But I’m also enormously grateful to anyone who actually takes the time to write a review (I have no idea how most book bloggers manage!) and ultimately, no matter what they say, you just have to respect that it’s that person’s opinion. There isn’t a single writer in the world who everybody likes – I’ve recommended some of my absolute favourite books to friends only for them to hate them, so I console myself that if writers I really admire get bad reviews occasionally, there’s no shame in me getting one!

When writing, do you plot and organize, or do you write then fit it all together?
I start off writing character sketches or short scenes, not in any order, but just to get a feel for the story and the characters, and that usually reveals the general direction of things, without any set structure. Then I do an unplotted, hand written first draft, which I don’t plan out – I like to give the characters a bit of freedom, and see where they take me. I usually know roughly how a book will end, but I quite often have no idea how to get there!

What is one thing you absolutely cannot do without while writing?
Notebooks and good pens (not expensive, just a very specific type – I’m insanely fussy about pens). I do all my first and second drafts, and my character sketches, in longhand.

If you could visit any place, where would it be?
I’m not particularly well-travelled so there are loads of places I’d like to visit – San Francisco, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Venice and Madrid are probably my top five.

Favorite food?
I know it’s boring, but either cheese on toast or veggie bangers and mash. I hardly ever cook for myself, but luckily a couple of my close friends are food bloggers, who like to cook me exotic meals – so I wouldn’t be able to tell you what they were, but they are usually delicious!

Do you have any hidden talents?
I wish I did! But no, alas. I don’t have a huge amount of visible talents, either! I just spend all my time writing…

Cat or dog?
Cat, definitely. I don’t have one at the moment, and I do like dogs, too, but definitely cats!

Anything you would like to add?
Just thank you very much for having me – support from bloggers such as yourself is invaluable to authors, and we really do appreciate the effort you put into it!

I really appreciate you taking time from your schedule to answer these questions.

Susan Kaye Quinn ~ Mindjack Novellas!

My New Novellas: The Handler and The Scribe (Mindjack Origins) By Susan Kaye Quinn I haz new stories out.
The Handler (Mindjack Origins)
It’s time for Julian Navarro to fulfill the mission left to him by his dead parents: to spark a revolution that would allow mindjackers to live freely in a mindreading world. While his ability allows him to mentally control the instincts of others, Julian wants to win jackers to his cause with words, not weapons. But when his first recruit has a secret—and bloody—history, Julian has to decide how far he’ll go to ensure his revolution isn’t snuffed out before it begins.
The Handler is a short novella (9,000 words or 30 pages).
The Scribe (Mindjack Origins)
Twenty-three-year-old Sasha is in search of a mindjacker Clan that won’t force him to use his unique skill—he can’t face the prospect of erasing any more souls. A revolutionary Clan leader offers him a chance to serve a higher purpose, but Sasha’s wary that it’s only a trick to use his ability. When a beautiful female jacker seeks refuge with them, and her former Clan leader wants her special skill back at any cost, Sasha has to decide if there are any causes worth the cost of using his ability one more time.
The Scribe is a short novella (12,000 words or 40 pages).
$0.99 on Amazon, Smashwords (other platforms coming soon)
Both The Handler and The Scribe are part of the Mindjack Origins series (which also includes Mind Games, the short prequel to Open Minds). These are companion stories to the Mindjack Trilogy and take place in the time period between Open Minds and Closed Hearts. They contain (minor) spoilers for those two novels.
Recommended Reading Order
Mind Games (short story)
Open Minds (novel)
Closed Hearts (novel)
The Handler (short novella)
The Scribe (short novella)
Free Souls (novel) - coming by Christmas (I hope)
I had tremendous fun writing these stories. They gave me a chance to explore the short form, write from a couple different male POVs (which I enjoy), as well as create some rich backstory for my characters that I can bring forward into Free Souls.
The Short Form
The SWFA says that these are the "offical" word counts for various short forms:
Technically, The Handler and The Scribe are novelettes, but that word gives me the heebie-jeebies (a technical term), so I call them short novellas. If the SWFA comes after me, I'll tell them you need new terminology, people.
I truly think that ebooks are changing the way we read stories, and that we need new terminology to describe stories of varying length. Or perhaps go entirely egalitarian and just call stories "short" and "long" and let the reader sort it out.
Indie Freedom
Whatever we call these shorter form stories, I LOVE the fact that I can publish stories literally hours after the final proofing. Indie publishing doesn't (have to) mean speed in writing, but it definitely means speed in publishing. And the freedom to publish (and therefore write) whatever strikes the writer's fancy. That kind of artistic freedom is something that writers are just beginning to explore. Of course, writers could write whatever they wished before e-publishing, but there was no guarantee of the chance at an audience. And audience matters to many (not all) writers. We want our work to be read; that's part of why we create it in the first place. With indie publishing, whether anyone actually reads it is in the hands of the readers themselves. There are many ways for readers to discover short stories. Amazon and Barnes&Noble are quickly adding "short story" categories to their bestseller listings. Mind Games has been on these lists almost from when it was first published in May. When it was FREE, it was often on the front page of Amazon's top 100 SF list. So I know that some readers discovered that short story independent of the Mindjack series. That may be true for these stories as well, or readers may click through the links at the back of my books and discover them that way. Or perhaps they'll stumble upon them when searching for "neuropunk" - a term I just made up, but I'm rather fond of, so I put it in the tags for The Handler and The Scribe. Maybe these shorts will expand my digital footprint or maybe they'll just be fun for fans of the series. I know they were fun for me, and that counts for something as well.
Do you write short fiction? Have you published it? If so, please share your experiences in the comments!

ISBN eBook: 9781615727629
ISBN Print: 9781615727636

A Dark Secret. Thomas Morehart and his sister, Kara are vampyre, not the undead, but creatures evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to mimic their prey, man. Then - rescued from a Nazi Prison Camp, Thomas and Kara are brought to the U.S. and forced to work inside government-owned mortuaries. Now -betrayed by the government sixty-seven years later, Thomas and Kara are in a race against time to transform back to their feral states or risk Exsanguination by government sanctioned hit squads.

From Wikipedia: Mike Kearby (born 1952) is an American novelist and inventor. Since 2005, Kearby has published ten novels, one graphic novel, and written two screenplays: (2011) Boston Nightly, with fellow writer Paul Bright and (2012) The Devouring. Boston Nightly is scheduled for filming in the spring of 2013.

Kearby was born in Mineral Wells, Texas, and received a B.S. from North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) in 1972. He taught high school English and reading for 10 years and created ""The Collaborative Novella Project"" The project allows future authors to go through the novel writing process from idea to published work.

Interview
How long have you been writing?
I started writing in 2005. My first novel was published in 2008.

What jobs did you have before you became a writer?
I started out my work life as a high school reading teacher.  After ten years, I joined corporate America where I worked for another twenty years, before heading to the country where I took up ranching and writing.

Tell us a little about your book.
The Devouring is based on my premise that vampire are not the undead, but an animal species evolved over millions of years to harvest a specific amino acid chain in human blood. I make the distinction by calling my characters vampyre in the book. After WWII, vampyre are domesticated by the U.S. government. The domestication is achieved by allowing the vampyre to run government owned mortuaries where they have an unlimited supply of blood. That’s the storyline. The plot, of course, is much more involved.

What is one book you could read over and over?
To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee.

What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy cooking with my wife, reading, and visiting grandchildren.

How do reviews, good or bad, affect you?
Let me answer in a roundabout way. I submitted my first novel to Dorchester Publishing in 2006. It was rejected by the western genre editor. In 2007, a new editor took over the genre. She called and asked to buy my novel, plus the novel I had just finished. To get back to your question, you learn not to take anything personal in the writing business. What one editor hates, another may love. The same goes for reviewers.

When writing, do you plot and organize, or do you write scenes then fit it all together?
I actually use an unorthodox method. Once the storyline idea arrives, I may spend weeks writing the book in my head: never putting a word on paper. After I have the basic story goal set-up; I write a chapter or scene in my head each night before I go to sleep. When morning comes, I get up and put the previous evening’s chapter into my Word doc. Like I said, unorthodox, but it works for me.

What is one thing you absolutely cannot do without while writing?
Music: specifically, a movie soundtrack that fits the book. For The Devouring, I listened to Kilar’s soundtrack for Bram Stocker’s Dracula.

If you could visit any place, where would it be?
I would love to explore the mind of Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I can pick up objects with my toes.

Favorite food?
Sushi

Cat or dog?
I love dogs, however, currently I don’t have a dog, but do have 5 cats???

Favorite color?
Blue.

Beach or mountains?
Mountains.

Coffee or tea?
Coffee.

Thanks for inviting me into your blog.

I really appreciate you taking time from your schedule to answer these questions.

Review ~ Wander Dust (The Seraphina Parrish Trilogy #1)

Ever since her sixteenth birthday, strange things keep happening to Seraphina Parrish.

The Lady in Black… burns Sera’s memories.

Unexplainable Premonitions… catapult her to other cities.

The Grungy Gang… wants to kill her.

And a beautiful, mysterious boy… stalks her.

But when Sera moves to Chicago, and her aunt reveals their family connection to a centuries old, secret society, she is immediately thrust into an unbelievable fantasy world, leading her on a quest to unravel the mysteries that plague her. In the end, their meanings crash into an epic struggle of loyalty and betrayal, and she’ll be forced to choose between the boy who has stolen her heart and the thing she desires most.
Wander Dust is the breathtaking fantasy that will catapult you through a story of time, adventure, and love.

My Review
This book is full of great imagery. I feel like I stepped into the world Michelle Warren created. The words just leaped from the page. For me, this book has a Harry Potter feel to it. I really connected with the characters and was intrigued by the mystery surrounding Sera. Bishop, of course, is dreamy. There is some romance, but it is a side story and not the main focal point. There were some great twists! I can't wait to see what Sera will encounter next!

Good Book!
